I established Yass Chiropractic in July 2008, and was practicing in Canberra before this.

Being an active member of the Gonstead Chiropractic Society of Australia I enjoy participating in ongoing Gonstead seminars and workshops so that I can provide you with very specific Chiropractic Care.

Until recently, I was a member of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia but I still adhere to their ethical Chiropractic principles and guidelines and continue to undertake regular continuing education. This allows me to better service you as a patient, with the most up to date techniques and knowledge, so you can be assured that you are in good hands.

Being a member of a Chiropractic Association or Society is not a legal requirement for being a Chiropractor, but many Chiropractors find it helps them in their practice of Chiropractic. I am legally registered as a Chiropractor in both NSW and the ACT and thoroughly enjoy undertaking seminars that are offered to the Chiropractic Profession.

WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?

Please click on the above link to read a paragraph about Chiropractic. Chiropractors work with your nervous system, often the spine, and aim to reduce interference to areas of your nervous system. These areas are where your brain-body connections are not working in harmony. This can result in pain, organs not functioning properly, altered sleep patterns, mood disturbances and postural problems, to name a few.

There are 4 main techniques that I practice, shown below.

  1. ·         Gonstead
  2. ·         Diversified
  3. ·         Activator Method
  4. ·         Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT)

The first two are manual techniques (these are the ones where you often hear ‘cracks’ or ‘pops’) and the second two are non-manual (where some wedged blocks may be used under your pelvis to gently realign your body (SOT), or a small, spring-loaded mechanism to adjust your body [an Activator adjusting instrument] may be used). Your organs may also be checked (usually done via muscle testing), as may your skull (cranial) bones, and your muscles. I have also completed postgraduate training in the peripheral joints of the body (your arms, legs, jaw and shoulders) as well as training in the areas of pregnancy and paediatrics.

You may also be referred for X-rays of your spine, or other joints, if required.

WHAT CAN A CHIROPRACTOR HELP YOU WITH?

Below are some of the many conditions that people find may be helped with Chiropractic care:

and many more!!

Since your nervous system governs the whole body, it's important to make sure it's functioning properly. Your brain and body need to talk to each other all the time, to know where the body is in space, how the organs are functioning, how your stress levels are, how your heart rate is, as well as juggling all those other worldly worries! Your brain needs feedback from the rest of the body so it can govern everything properly. If there is a break in this communication line anywhere, it means that there's a problem.

For instance, numbness in the arm or hand means your brain isn't monitoring what's happening so well in that limb. This may result in decreased muscle strength and reduced range of motion of that limb. If you have some nerve interference to your upper neck, you might find that you are unable to handle as much stress, you might feel nauseous or you might not sleep well. If the nerves to your intestines (these usually stem from your lower back) aren't working so well, perhaps your small and large intestines won't absorb as well as they should, which may mean you could become dehydrated, or your energy levels drop. Also, your bowel habits might not be as regular. Over a long time, this may result in more drastic problems such as polyps, or even cancer.

Of course, most problems are nowhere near this scary, but if you had the choice of your body being able to be 'switched on' and knowing everything that was going on, wouldn't you want that? This is what we do as Chiropractors - removing your nerve interference, so that you can be the best you can be - yourself!

But what we all need to remember is that Chiropractic only works because your body wants to be well. Think of it as 'innate intelligence' - when you have a scratch on your leg, your body can heal it up, without any need for bandaging or antiseptic. I think that's pretty amazing. All alive bodies want to be well - and that's a good thing!! But if you are eating all the wrong things for your body, are dehydrated, rather unfit and overweight and take in lots of poisons like cigarette smoke, alcohol and multiple drugs (even prescription ones), it may be difficult for your body to adapt to the changes that a Chiropractor can make to your body. This may mean that your body does not have the best internal ability to 'get well' and 'stay well', which means some drastic life changes probably need to be made! This is often where I'll suggest things like certain exercises, stretches, dietary changes, maybe a visit to a naturopath, your GP, an acupuncturist, a physiotherapist or other specialist. So although Chiropractic is fantastic, and can yield great results, it's really your own body that does the work, the healing, the 'getting well' bit!

WHO DO I TREAT?

I am qualified, and most happy, to treat anyone from newborns to the aged. With my 5 years of University training and regular, ongoing postgraduate seminars, I have a range of techniques that should be suitable for most people.

I have completed postgraduate training in paediatrics and pregnancy and have varied methods for treating babies and pregnant women, all of which are perfectly safe and quite gentle. I have also undertaken much postgraduate training in peripheral adjusting. This means I can check and adjust (if necessary) your wrists, elbows, shoulders, feet, ankles and knees.

Sometimes, however, your complaints may not be of a Chiropractic nature. Being a Primary Care Practitioner, you are still welcome to make an appointment with me without a referral. It is my duty to determine whether I can actually help you with your condition/s, and if I cannot, you will be directed to the most appropriate area and/or other health professional/s. You may also be directed to other health professionals alongside your Chiropractic care.

ABOUT THE CHIROPRACTOR:

Dr Robyn Stephenson (Chiropractor) BChiroSc, MChiro (Macquarie University)

I first saw a Chiropractor when I was 11 years old. My mother had been adjusted by a Chiropractor for a while for her sore lower back, and he suggested that my sister and I be checked out, just in case we had any vertebral subluxations (nerve interference in the spine). Since I'd been doing gymnastics, had a few trips and falls and a broken collarbone when I was younger, it was just as well! The chiropractor was the one who found I had a fracture in the base of my low spine (called a spondylolisthesis) when X-rays were taken.

Exercise has always played a large part in my life - tennis, hockey, rock-climbing, bushwalking, ultimate frisbee, swimming, soccer, squash etc. I currently keep myself active through pilates, swing dancing, walking, cycling, swimming - and occasional tennis (as well as my job!). I also try to look after my body by drinking plenty of filtered water, eating healthily, and getting enough sleep. I also try to be adjusted regularly, see an acupuncturist, have massages and the occasional naturopathic treatment. And as much as I love my job, I also love taking time off!

During my breaks, I love to travel. I've been to lots of places in Australia (still have to visit the Top End, though!), Europe, the USA and parts of Africa and Asia. I had a totally relaxing break in Fiji in March and am travelling to Perth in July. Aside from travelling and sport, I have passions for cooking, reading, astrology, music, playing the piano, movies, the environment & my cat, Lucinda!

Having a love of learning, I attend multiple Chiropractic seminars every year, which keep me up-to-date with Chiropractic. It's great learning new information, or even just consolidating what I have already learned. I first completed a Geology degree through UTS in Sydney, but it was not to be.

I'm originally from Sydney and still travel there to visit family and friends. I moved to Canberra in 2006 and again to Yass when beginning my Practice here in 2008. However, I have recently returned to Canberra to live, and enjoy the scenic drive each day! :-)
